HOW AN ID SCANNER WORKS

Gone are the days when criminally minded individual would simply change their names and looks, and then move from state to state after committing a crimes. Times have changed, now the detailed identification of any individual can be stored in a magnetic stripe laminated behind a card that is easily carried about. There are different kind of scanners with 3 major ways of reading or decoding the data in an I.D.

Swiping
An encoded card can be swipe through a scanner that is built for that purpose. It is open ended and card can easily swipe through it. All kinds of institution today, have employed this method of identity verification – without even bothering about asking questions about the details of the individual in probe one could just get their I.D card then pass it through a device that read into the stripe and then displays the data embedded in the card. The magnetic stripe is made of plastic film with tiny magnetic particles that stores information through by encoding it. This is very similar to the tape found in the VHS or cassettes. One would even change their identity on a whim and still be able to carry on a normal life like nothing ever happened.

Insertion
Cards can also be inserted into a scanning machine, and example of this is what we have in most banks and some stores today. The ATM machine is a good example of this type of I.D card scanner. An I.D scanner comes in sizes and they can be used to validate the age of an individual who is prohibited by age to access certain social gathering. It can also be used to keep out unwanted or unauthorized persons from going into a restricted places in an organization. I.D card scanner is majorly used to decode the information that had been encoded into the magnetic stripes. It can understand this coded data by reading the changes in the tiny magnetic particles positioning on the stripe.

Proximity
This can be used by holding the I.D card in front of the scanner within a certain distance. The side with the encoded stripe is pointed directly at the scanner while the scanner picks up the information and act accordingly. Most scanner comes equip with a screen to display whatever information or data that had been encoded into the I.D card – while others can be attached to a monitor. Some scanners, like the proximity reader, are able to act on certain command as programmed by the encoder. This is mostly used in Hotels and other organizations where anyone who has an access card can just hold it against the scanner to access their lodge or offices.
